Reviews of Bang by Marc Jacobs

Remember, remember, this fifth of November
Marc Jacobs' cologne named Bang
For it would be tragic
Were gunpowder magic
Forgotten, you know, the thang

So let me beseech thee, to scroll not completely
And listen a spell or two
This brief adoration
Will cause no inflation
Of pocketbook, pecker or pew

On word of good Ruggles, said bottle me juggles
Albeit a rare event
Sha'n't be from it parted
Though barely be started
Since pepper be heaven's scent

Of black, white and pinky, its peppers be stinky
But that's just where beauties start
For finer and finer
This woody designer
Drills down into pepper's heart

Sillage and projection, this pepp'ry selection
Performs like a fragrant champ
Though hella tenacious
On balance it's gracious
And bottle be flagrant camp

Now as for gunpowder, though pepper be louder
Good Bang's gotten for your buck
Both black type and smokeless
Betray any wokeness
By which this fine joke might suck

I must now admit, to one last little bit
By which all noses might not swear
It's linearama
There ain't no damn drama
For those who for such things care

So fire up your Cisco, and seek out this disco
If pepper's your passion, pal
This ain't Dot or Daisy
Or Lola's vulvazy
Bang ain't for the av'rage gal

Remember, remember, this fifth of November
Marc's gunpowd'ry, pepp'ry bling
O'er which some colognial
Raised glass ceremonial
To c'mon, you know, the King.

Fragrance in three words: Fresh Powdery Pepper

This is a discontinued and sort after fragrance. It's not mega rare or a holy grail and sold really well at the time, enough to warrant a flanker, Bang Bang. Current prices seem to be around £80 for the bigger bottles. When launched I think the price was around £40 for 100ml.

This uses a unique combination of three types of pepper (Black, Pink and White). It is noticeably peppery, but I don't get the pungency of the black pepper. Drydown is a sort of woody and very clean powdery scent which is undeniably masculine. it would maybe be considered old school now, given vanilla, cocoa and amber have become the base notes of choice.

I know a lot of people have reported poor longevity and projection with this and I can see why. I might have been fortunate in that it lasted around 4-5 hours with medium projection. Like Karma Chameleon "it comes and goes". I smelt nothing after an hour and then Bang it was back as strong as when it was first applied.

It's nothing amazing, but I really enjoyed it.

I'm on a pepper-focused scent search; L'Occitane Provence started me off but it suffers from a lack of longevity. Bang is the second I've sampled during this search (the first was F Black; not much long-lasting pepper). Bang has a hint of pepper which dissipates very quickly as does the entire EDT; serious longevity and sillage issues. I really wanted it to work, but it doesn't for me. HeWood DSquared2 Rocky Mountain has more pepper and lasts longer, if it just wasn't for that hint of "diaper" it has to it. Oh, well, on to my third pepper-focus sample scent: BLACKPEPPER BY CdG.

Sorry , but not my cup of tea.
It smells very in your face and potent , not apropriate to wear at all.
maybe for a car scent yes, not not for humans.
Cant find any occasion for this - not sprayed in more than 2 years now..

I don't see the point of this fragrance.

An ethereal burst of pepper followed by dry peppery woods. Extremely muted beyond the first half hour, and average duration. Moreover, this was released in 2010 when the peppery-woods genre was already well explored, and this brings nothing new to the table. One might consider Terre d'Hermes, Poivre Samarcande, Declaration, Honour Man, Comme des Garcons 2 Man, Tam Dao, Lalique White, and Wonderwood as more worthwhile alternatives. For pepper (forgetting the woods) one might consider Piper Nigrum or Noir Epices (and several others).

Gimmicky more than anything else.

Decent pepper opening and then later dries to a very light, woody and tea smell.

I've heard Bang uses Iso E Super, so it didn't surprise me that the scent comes and goes, with sweet woody notes. It's never big on projection, always very light. Heat should help it project more.

I see this as a day time/office scent but seems versatile enough for most occasions.

Similar to Sentiment by Escada or maybe its Terra D'Hermes... either way it doesn't last very long... Maybe 60 to 90 minutes then its gone... Very disappointing. What scent you do get is very nice.

So what can I add? It's nicely blended. It smells of Pepper. It is based on a typical woody amber Fougere. It lasts for about an hour, if you're lucky. You can smell it from about 3 inches away. It is more of a "Pfft" than a Bang. I bought my bottle in TK Maxx, as it was so cheap.

Bang opens up with a similar essence to its name. Projecting strong peppercorn notes, I also get a light scent of fresh liquorish. The base is almost creamy with textures of patchouli and earthy green notes, like moss. The longevity is rather disappointing, lasting about 5 hours on average. I am impartial with the initial peppercorn but it tones down rather quickly but unfortunate the cologne in general dissipates within a few hours. It's a great cologne for night at home with your special someone.

Opens up with a strong blast of pepper, before it settles down to a more general earthy tone ... for about 30 minutes, before it completely disappears.

Longevity is terrible, sillage is non-existent and projection is nothing to write home about ... which is a shame, because - for the first few minutes at least - I quite like the way this smells. Given the comparisons with TDH, I'm thinking that once this bottle of Bang is finished, I should replace it with a bottle of TDH ...

HIT and RUN...

What does a highway collision smell like? Marc Jacobs may have the answer: Flying debris all-kinds-of-spicy... metal through warm leatherette... trickling fuel meets sizzling tarmac, and then... BANG ! Opens with an explosion of pepper, everywhere!

Thirty minutes later, I ask myself... is it still there?

Either this scent has just pulled a "hit and run" with my 50 bucks, or I'd grown anosmic to it's onslaught. Finally, a whiff of something (reminiscent of cinnamon tic-tacs), reorients my nose to the dry-down: A smouldering aftermath of cedar and vetiver - heavily pepper-rmilled in a barrage of black, white and reds. The low resinous hum of a benzoin engine left still running in the background. A touch of pungent moss-chouli lends depth and a moist acerbic tang to an otherwise dry and desolate crime scene. The tone may be moody, but not grim - thanks to a life-giving hint of rosy sweetness from the pink peppercorns.

(Surprisingly) Bang! is a simple, linear scent (after the opening) - propelled by a soft, close-to-body sillage. You might not smell it at times, but others can. Although minimalist, I wouldn't call it a "blob". There's some perceivable note distinction, here. But it's essentially an "Aura" scent, and a unique one at that. The audacious overdose of pepper is sufficiently intriguing. It comes off both polished and raunchy; natural and unnatural; edgy but brooding. I dig it. But It's far from the bombastic, metal protruding, attention grabbing "Banger" it's opening minutes, (or marketing) had me believe.

Frankly, I'd take the sultry simmering pepper-pod in Bang!, over yet another mass-appealing "club-banger" - any day!

I'm actually better off for surviving the wreck!

Bang! is uncomplicated, unconventional, and uncompromising in its sense of style. Marc Jacobs made a bold move with this unlikely candidate (in the 2010 designer marketplace), amid a landscape of child-pacifying confections that pander to Gucci pocketbooks with bubble-gum taste. In spite of the survivor scars on the bottle (evoking Cronenberg's film noir classic, Crash) -Bang! likewise made little impact on the mass market. But has nonetheless become a hit! with me.

Bang on...

Nautral right now because I just put it on an hour or so ago. Reaging the other reviews I should expect to smell it for about another hour, and then BANG.......it's gone.

Pepper is exactly what you get from the onset. And you get it in buckets and spades. Pepper, pepper, pepper. I'm at the cedar note now. Pleasant, but as was suggested earlier..........linear.

TDH is far superior to this, and the only similiarity that I can detect is that they both start off with (somewhat) overpowering notes. Ends there.

May have to try it a few times with a bit more application next time to hopefully increase longevity.

Stay tuned.......................

On my skin the opening blast of the pepper smells like cat piss and vitamins. Luckily it is rather brief and when it fades and the woods make an appearance I do kind of like it. I get the incense vibe and to me it smells kind of like dirt in a good way. Unfortunately, it doesn't project well and Bang is entirely gone in about 2-3 hours hence the name I suppose.

I bought the 50ml for $16, so I am not going to spend too much time complaining about Bang. If I paid retail I would be much more unhappy with this frag. If you are looking for a brief masculine/sensual scent this might be a nice change of pace.

I'm thinking because it is called Bang and the 2-3 hour longevity perhaps it was intended as a bedtime scent. Bang would also work for a trip to the gym.

Genre: Woods

The best part of Bang may be the hilarious copy in the scent pyramid: "Hypnotic elemi accord?" "Primal masculine woods?" ROTFL

Peppercorn notes, black or pink, pop up so often now they bid well to become the Calone of early 21st century male perfumery. Bang tops the trend by offering peppercorns sans adornment. Its black pepper top note is the most aggressive I've smelled since Villoresi's Piper Nigrum, but where Piper Nigrum morphs into a powdery vanilla oriental drydown, Bang employs a dry cedar note, a dab of vetiver, and a whopping dose of abrasive, bitter woody amber in an effort to sustain the peppercorn effect as long as possible. The result is a relatively linear, simplistic, and one-dimensional olfactory experience.

Deciding whether you'll like Bang is easy: do you want to smell like peppercorns? If so, yes. Me? I've grown bored with it in the time it's taken to compose this paragraph. I guess the ad copy wasn't so good after all...

The opening is quite peppery, but only for about 5 minutes. I see the references to TDH, but this is fleeting, almost subliminal, only similar in that there is an "earthy" quality here, like in Encre Noire also, only much more muted in Bang. I end up imagining salty homemade play dough with some wet dirt thrown in for good measure. I echo the sentiment that this is a try-before-you-buy scent.

Great FragranceI am a big fan of Terre D'Hermes, and while Bang has some similarities it's not nearly as earthy as TDH and perhaps a bit more linear. However, I definitely consider Bang to be a great fragrance in its own right. While I definitely get the peppery top notes, this frag to me is actually slightly woodsy and definitely spicy on the dry down and very pleasant! It remains clean, is not sweet or cloying and has pretty good longevity on my skin. I know over the last few years my nose has become more sensitive to some of the sweeter silage monster type of scents. I used to wear YSL L'Homme, Allure Sport, Himalya and have found that the first two became to sweet for my liking, while Himalya became too powdery on the drydown. I'm a huge fan of GIT, Armania Mania, and the aforementioned TDH. I do like scents to transform a bit on my skin and not be too linear, but I like when they can remain fresh and not become something too sweet or powdery. Just my .02 Never buy blind!!Pros: Spicy, woodsy, but not sweetCons: None that I can see"

a total disappointment

One year after buying a bottle, this scent after a full wearing let me completely down since it has no duration and sillage whatsoever!

So save your money for something better!

Pros: nice opening
Cons: not even a skin scent"

Somewhat reminiscent of Terre d'Hermès, without the finesse or longevity.

The pepper in Bang doesn't smell like black pepper. It has a peppery aspect to it, but I think a lot of reviews on this are deceiving. What does it smell like to me? A medicinal note combined with cedar and turpentine combined with a black licorice and benzoin. Not a big fan of the opening, but the dry down was rather nice. During the dry down stage it becomes more mellow and pleasant. Longevity and projection are a bit below average and this becomes a skin scent. Can't give it a thumbs up because the opening is pretty nasty and it's doesn't last as long as it should.

Pepper, pepper, moss, and pepper. Very linear but doesn't smell bad. Maybe as a layering fragrance

Don't believe it when people say its a huge dose of pepper, its not at all in my opinion. It's a really nice and simple and masculine blend of some pepper, vetiver and spicy woods. Super masculine and spicy fragrance, actually quite soft. I got it for a VERY good price so I cant say anything bad about it. OH it's also a sleeper. BAM.

This is just the one I have been looking for. I love the pepper notes in several colognes out there, so when I read the notes on this one, I knew that I had to get it.

I love the initial pepper blast, which settles down just a bit and blends nicely with the vetiver and woods. I am still experimenting with how much to use. Two sprays just doesn't seem to last long enough, but I don't want to overdo this one. Three may be the magic number.

Even though it has settled close to my skin, I will get a nice spicy pepper whiff now and then that just makes me smile. Maybe a little one dimensional, but it's a dimension that I love!

Get ready for the pepper..!!

If you like the scent of Black Pepper with outdoors "woodsy" finishing notes, this fragrance is for you. It is definitely unique... I am not a huge fan of the spicy woodsy type of fragrances, but Sweetie tends to gravitate towards these - and for some reason, my collection of these seems to be growing..!!

The bottle is uniquely designed and is definitely a conversation piece. The longevity is below average and the projection/sillage is about average. While I have not received any compliments, again, Sweetie does like the fragrance - and that is good enough for me.

It would be hard to pinpoint the exact time and occasion for Bang, but I guessing it would be more of a fall/winter type of fragrance that is popular at night. For the avid collector, pick it up based on the uniqueness of the fragrance and the bottle design.

All things considered, I give Bang 3.7 stars out of 5. I am not a fan, but am a collector. Enthusiasm moves the world...

A big dose of pepper and woods with what smells like Frankincense. It is a masculine and very straightforward scent with no hidden extras, pepper and woods all the way.

If I switch off my analytical brain and go by the smell I do like this as its straightforward and what you smell is what you get through its duration. Perfect if you are looking for a casual masculine scent with no frills just pepper and woods.
