Reviews of Gold Leather by Atelier Cologne

Starts out very harsh and very loud, a bit too much for me. The scent itself is good and interesting, a spicy dark leather. For the price I'd rather choose Cuir by Molinard - although Gold Leather may feel slightly more refined and less rough. It smells good, especially after it dries down a bit, I'd just choose some other leather for me.

Fruity, dry, bitter, acid, sweet, spicy. Original. It's got everything and is totally unisex.

I could sample Patchouli Ardent from Guerlain some weeks ago and this reminded me of it.

Gold Leather - definatley a worthy night-out scent which gets compliments. This one really breaks away from the house style. More like a TF private blend or middle-eastern inspired montale scent. It did feel a bit like a box ticking exercise: leather-oud / saffron-oud / rose-oud / general booziness - all present by the truckload. This modern type oud aroma-chemical almost works as an airy top-note creating a scented force-field about a metre around the wearer. The opening reminded me a lot of MFKs oud (original), creating a golden haze via the saffron-oud combination. The dry down had a very similar leather to TF TL. And there was a ubiquitous rose-oud. I honestly can't fault the quality, ambition or opulence of the scent. Thing is im just a little jaded by these kind of note combinations. And to have them all in one fragrance was a little too much. And the rose was a bit too floral-feminine when combined with sweet fruit. If I came to this earlier i'd have loved it. Right now I'm ambivalent, although it achieves what it set out to achieve. It will stand its ground beside TF TL, Montales and even MFK it smells like money! - but then, similar themes can be found at Marks and Spencer for a tenth of the cost.

extroverted performance. more is more here. Overall a tricky rating of 72/100 I hope the others in the premium 'metal series' do a little less.

A fruity notes appears briefly full-on in the opening blast - a note of candied mandarins with a touch of mirabelle plums.

A boozy note is added swiftly and overpowers the fruits to some extent. It is the aroma of a somewhat nondescript dark rum that leads into the drydown, where the leather now evolves without further ado. A leather on the brighter and lighter side, soft, quite sweet at times and with only a minimum of underlying smokiness. A leather without any harshness, and certainly without any gasoline element.

The base keeps the leather on board all right, but sees the development of a very pleasant artemisia impression, which is smooth and quite balsamic far a certain stretch of time. This merged with a woodsy undertone that has characteristics of the cedar component here and there. The triad of leather, wood and artemisia see this composition out until the end.

I get moderate sillage, adequate projection and eight hours of longevity on my skin.

This snort for warmer autumn days is all right as a leather fragrance, but the drydown and the base result in being rather pleasant, even with a glimpse or originality. The performance of quite good, and the ingredients are blended well. At the borderline between neutral and positive, so in dubio pro reo: overall - just - a thumbs-up. 3/5.

Incense and not much else for about 8 hours. When it finally calms down it actually turns into a nice warm skin scent of plum schapps, something like turmeric (but soapy clean, not dry and dusty) plus a light leather. Actually very pleasant but no projection by this stage. And earlier on it's too much of an incense-thug for practical use.

Fruity beginning which is very sweet. I also get some dried plums that have been macerating in alcohol and added on top some extra orange peel for freshness. At one point, I pick something mentholated that goes on and off.
The booze is gone and the fruity notes are there, going strong, sweet and juvenile most of the time as they don't have something powerful to balance with, being that the leather is very shy, more like a soft suede; it is clean and it's sitting quietly in the background. The fruits are clearly dominating the blend, but towards the end, woods are joining and it also has some kind of dusty feel to it.

I also get the fermented fruit, rum and leather in the opening and it's all very loud. It's more of the same in the drydown but you do get some nice woody smells mixed in.

I get big projection with Gold Leather.

I do not know why a fruit note is so often paired with leather--it seems an odd combination to me. That said, when it is done well--as it is here--it can result in a dynamic scent. Gold Leather opens with fruit and booze with the base of woods and leather not too far behind. The fruit here is an initial orange note that smells to me like chocolate Jaffa Cakes, giving way to an almost fermented plum note. A eucalyptus note keeps the fruit dry and pairs well with the boozy rum. While this is definitely a leather scent, there are lots of woods in the base, with the Gaiac, Cedar and Oud. Gold Leather has all of the quality that Atelier Cologne scents are known for and smells very rich and natural. While I like my leather a little less fruity, this is a great example of the genre, well done and very nice.

Was not a fan of GL. Started out with a fermented fruit smell mixed with a boozy accord. These notes seem to overthrow the expected leather note that never showed up to work.

What a nice scent!
A smooth fresh, fruity scent from the Bitter Orange, Jamaican rum, Plum, Cedarwood, and Leather wonderfully submerged together. There are more notes to be discovered, however, these are the ones that stand out. The Plum and Cedarwood and Leather are the dominant players, together giving off that fruity boozy fragrant. The Plum note stays around for the duration of the dry down, however the leather sits underneath to give balance so as to not cross over into feminine territory. That does not suggest this is not for a female, just expressing that this fragrance stays in the middle.

If you have ever smelled Mure et Musc by L'artisan this is very similar. Very different than Santal Carmin;

The array of notes blended together gives off this sweet berry/musk aroma that's quite captivating. Stays in the middle as for gender, unisex.

Atelier Cologne Gold Leather is the first somewhat animalistic fragrance by the house that I've tried, and it does not disappoint in uniqueness or creativity. Certainly a leather-intensive fragrance, it nonetheless has a variety of influences. It's fruity and boozy due to the plum note (which factors in so prominently in my boozy enjoyment of By Kilian Single Malt, for one), woody and dark due to the oud and some other wood notes, and there are some green notes.

True leather fans (which I can't claim to be) might not like it because, while the leather is omnipresent in the fragrance, it doesn't dominate the experience of it. The opening is very citrus-dominant, and the dry down is much sweeter and woodier. It's unisex to me--not strikingly masculine or feminine, and probably is better for cold weather than warm weather, but like Vanille Insensee and Rose Anonyme, the cologne backing of it does seem to make it friendly enough for summer.

Still, bolder performer than most of the line, Gold Leather projects pretty well for a couple of hours before settling down but the longevity is solid, as it remains

Its pricing is higher than the Atelier norm: $215 for 100ml retail, but discounted at FragranceX to $140. It's a "like" not a "love" for me, as I'm pretty picky with leathers, though there's certainly a lot more going on here.

Gold Leather has a crude and loud opening of fruit and leather. The fruitiness subsides a bit as a subtle rum note becomes discernible. There is a slight relief along with a hint of greenness. The subsequent dry down is mostly a woody leather accord.

Gold Leather comes across as chintzy, derivative and even hideous and vulgar. It's hard to imagine it being an Atelier Cologne creation. While I'm not generally a fan of this style of leathers, Paco Rabanne's $1 Million and Tuscan Leather are superior alternatives for being more well defined and/or distinctive.

Good sillage and longevity on skin.

I was happy to bump into this fragrance whilst on holiday, and it stuck with me....

As for the scent, for the moment I generally can't pick out and name the different notes, but bear with me.....it has a strong opening, which is almost too sickly for me, yet still enjoyable....it's rich, sweet, strong, and fascinating. And keeps me regularly dipping back to smell my wrist!

For now I've just received a sample of this in the mail, from the AC website....but for the future, it would take a special fragrance to replace this on my to buy next list!
Very good..!!

Absolutely fantastic! My signature LEATHER scent. The booze at the top neutralizes the medicinal harshness As TF Tuscan Leather has. I'm wearing this since 11am this morning and 6+ hrs. later it's still kicking. TF Tuscan Leather is a great Fragrance, for me, this works better. Very comforting....

Straight to Heaven meets Leather Oud as Gold Leather opens with a boozy-fruity rum accord over woodsy hints of guaiac wood, something herbal-minty and something subtly animalic or barnyard-like. No leather yet but I'm enjoying this phase too much to complain. It takes the better part of an hour before the tops taper off and the leather grows a little more noticeable- it's warm if slightly salty. Like a well worn jacket it hugs the skin closely and seldom projects beyond a few inches. Perhaps my nose is jaded but by this time I'm almost bored to tears. Despite its promising start, Gold Leather chooses to play it safe and ends up right smack in the middle of the road where it quickly gets overtaken by other leather scents with more verve and personality.

Absolutely lovely balanced plum, oud and leather notes throughout the duration of the fragrance which last 10+ hours... I really enjoy how Atelier Cologne does plum! Fruity, but never crossing to the gourmand.

I agree this is perfectly unisex!

Very pleasant and sensual leather based fragrance that the leather note is perfectly balanced for both genders.
The leather note is not the dominate note at all, but it's always there to keel the fragrance exactly where it belongs to .... unisex!
The opening is a semi sweet, boozy and very sensual mix of plum, leather and some spices.
It's warm, a little heavy and naughty, but very sexy and pleasant at the same time.
As time goes by, boozy feeling goes away and the leather note settles down a little bit.
I can smell more plum and some saffron while there is some sort of spicy smell beside all these notes.
Something like cinnamon maybe.
It's sweet, fruity, spicy and a little leathery and dark.
Almost no changes to the end.
Projection is strong and longevity can easily pass 12 hours.
As far as comparing this to "Byredo Accord Oud" they do have the same DNA and similarities, but I believe BYREDO is a little more fruity and less spicy.

The name and bottle are corny to me, but the smell is interesting. The salesman described the different notes to me, but what I detect is lime, salt and tequila. I basically felt like I spilled a margarita on myself. There is a sweet, woody, musky drydown, but the margarita smell remains. It is also rather expensive to only contain an Oud "accord" and not actual Oud.
The Good: Sweet opening, opens up to more savory.
The Bad: The "margarita" smell gets tiring to me.
Overall: Expertly crafted, but probably not for me.

Great floral/fruity opening.. The orange strikes for 5 mins and then saffron an rum take over.. Plum and the floral notes are detected after about 15 mins and are very loud and upfront the way I like it.. One of the best openings I have smelled in some time. After about 3 hours of the lovely opening a very light leather scent appears as the tops and mids are totally gone.. I am not a leather fan, but this scent had so many positives going for it and then it's gone.. Very original and the leather does last some time albeit close to the skin..
