Reviews of Intimate by Revlon

I just destroyed a tiny piece of the ozone layer with this pressurized atomizer of Intimate—oopsies!

This handsome "diamond-facet" (as mentioned on the box) bottle contains a true blitz of a chypre, announcing itself with a massive report of soaring aldehydes, honeyed honeysuckle, rosy rose and white floral delirium. It soon feels like slowly getting tipsy on a straw bale sipping plum wine.

Soon a powdery amber descends and hints of blushing skankiness from civet paw through, in a veil of moss and heady nitro musks. I love it.

I once read a review on a European Perfume site that pretty much summed this fragrance up -

"The name says it all: This perfume was formulated to ensure the wearer got laid."

Yep, I couldn't agree more. Ha, ha, ha ... Boy, this has to be one of the most animalic fragrances I've ever smelled. Dirty, dirty, dirty. Lovers of animalic scents will adore this perfume because that is what hit me on first spray. It does lighten up as the fragrance progresses, but it is always there right below the surface.

I have a vintage curvy bottle from Revlon with a gold image of an almost naked man and woman on the front of the bottle seated facing each other entwined in an embrace. SEX is what the image implies. Civet, animalic musk, castoreum, and indolic jasmine enforce that image. Intimate is just a nicer way to describe it.

Speaking of the bottle, just from looking at that alone, it's clear this was made in an age when even drugstore buys could exude some semblance of sophistication. (Word of warning about the sprayer though, it shoots out like a fire hose.) It's also clear the juice was made with better quality ingredients than many perfumes today.

The sandalwood is real here, not that synthetic stuff used nowadays in too many perfumes. It's a nice woody sandalwood too, beautifully blended in a resinous elixir of rose, powdery iris, creamy gardenia, dirty jasmine and musk, highlighted with a light dusting of spice and a dose of civet. All is anchored on a bed of oakmoss, amber, and a lovely, leather toned castoreum. Though classified a chypre, it comes across as an Oriental in the same way Dioressence (classified as a chypre here but as an Oriental on Dior's site) does. That spicy resinous texture gives that impression.

This fragrance also reminds me of Tabu, but whereas that fragrance is syrupy, heavy, and I find oppressive, this is lighter, more polished, and refined. Tabu also lacks the sexy animal elements so prominent here. I'm not saying they aren't in Tabu, just that I cannot smell them in the same way I can here – front and center! Intimate seems to be nearer to what the creator of Tabu, (if stories are to be believed), thought (knew?) how a lady of the evening smelled. But in this case, she'd be a high-priced call girl who plays the stock market by day.

Would I wear this fragrance outdoors? Not on your life. I'd be afraid I'd be followed by wolves - both the two-legged and four-legged kind! Still, it was fun to experience this little time capsule in history and to marvel at how daring and glamorous women used to be.

I agree with Barbara Herman - this is a sensual floral chypre with animalic notes. It is spicy, but I don't get the woody, creamy, powdery effect she does.

Floral and honey mimosa - yes, to a degree.

It is a very nice light scent, not heavy, just "suggestive," which is what I suppose the housewife of the 1950s wanted - this was, after all, a "drugstore" fragrance. Don't want to inspire hubby to make more babies than the Eisenhower administration can afford.

Top notes: Bergamot, Rose, Gardenia, Coriander
Middle notes: Jasmine, Orris, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Cedar wood
Base notes: Amber, Castoreum, Civet, Oak Moss, Musk

You can find vintage on Ebay for pennies - very nice.

I have an old sample obviously. The first spray is waxy crayon-aldehydes and old school floral symphonics. Very quickly it dries down into a honey pollen mimosa sweet skin. Not in the modern style (no cotton candy high notes), mostly lingering honey. It's pretty simple, hence my neutral rating. I prefer dark and complex structures.

I wish I knew the notes for this. I had some of this in the old days. I still have a couple of old bottles that I purchased from Ebay. It really does smell devine.

Intimate was one of my mom's favorites. I can still smell it in my mind. Too bad it was discontinued by Revlon because it was a real classy fragrance!

revlon was excellent and commented on by many people, the product by Jean Phillippe starts off smelling correct, then goes off like, aftershave, I still have a couple of bottles of the Revlon mix which is far superior to the Jean phillipe mix

This scent as originally produced by Revlon, the house that was once able to produce very classy and distinctive scents at a very available price (like "Charlie", the original). It was a lovely, unforgettable, very "Old World" chypre, with a wonderful dry-down. Two of its peculiarities were that the dry-down was practically the same as its initial notes (which is a definite plus in this case) and that it quickly subsided into a very subtle fragrance which then lingered for at least 10-12 hours, sometimes even longer. At some point "Intimate" was discontinued, but was later resuscitated by the house of Jean Philippe. The smell doesn't seem to have changed, and the bottle is even lovelier now. This is a definite keeper!
