Reviews of Joop! Homme by Joop!

I was sure I had fond memories of Joop! from my college days. I had a roommate that loved it and it really did smell good on him. So when I saw it on sale over the holidays, I grabbed it. I eagerly rushed home to try it out and am now questioning the integrity of my own memory. It comes across as heavily synthetic to me and way too sweet (again, in a kind of "synthetically sweet" way). It was also very overpowering on both initial spray and for quite some time after. I could not even seem to wash it all off. Hours later, after a a quick scrub, I could still smell it.

Joop, or "oop" as I like to call it was bought for a very minuscule amount...and it was still too high a price to pay. I thought it smelled just awful. Couldn't scrub it off fast enough. Thumbs down for me.

Joop! Was NOT a coming-of-age fragrance for me, I was born in 89. But I remember it.

Whenever I smell this, I'm reminded...of, well...grown men (or at least grown enough for me, teens would've seemed like adults when I was a toddler). Not intimidating men, but welcoming, protective, safe men. It scratches some sort of latent and subconscious feeling. I don't find it *attractive* (not that it's unattractive, but my imprinting of this occured before I was into guys in *that* way), but I do find it extremely fun, oddly masculine (for the notes, on paper this seems like it would be femme), nostalgic and comforting. I think my uncle might've worn this. Each time I smell it, I think of him...hanging out in his garage with my plastic dinosaurs while he fixed his dirt bike. Maybe it's because this has a slight plasticky (in a good way) undertone?

It's not something I even care to do a note breakdown on; it's a wall of powdery, youthful, electric sweetness. So, so feel-good...verging on euphoric.

My favorite fragrance is Angel, but JOOP! is almost a male counterpart. Not in scent at all, but in philosophy. In vibe. In spirit. It hits me in the soul.

Please respect this, it's lighthearted in personality, but heavy in presence. It's a true love for me, always will be.

So based on what most people say, i expected to not like this at all. I just wanted a vintage bottle for reference and found a small 1oz early 90s bottle very cheap. I have literally never smelled this in my life prior to today. Well suprisingly i actually DO like this, and i think maybe its been slightly misrepresented.

Its sweet. And no doubt, in 1989 this must have been VERY sweet. But its not the same disgusting cheap sweetness alot of mens fragrances have now, theres alot more going on. The indolic aspect of the jasmine comes through noticeably, and the cinnamon changes from an almost toasty cinnamon to a more candied type as time goes on. The vanilla works really well with the jasmine, as does the patchouli (all together). I think the thick base of this fragrance goes a long way to make this smell more substantial and frankly upmarket than its common reputation claims. People say its bubble gum, i get a closer sense of marzipan or something like that in the drydown, although the florals in here keep it from being a gourmand. It also reminds me of the clove rock candy my irish grandmother would bring back to the states for us as a kid in the opening.

Possible hot take: i think jpg le male was kindaaaa a ripoff of this. Especially in the opening, le male and joop both have this lotion facet that reminds you of suntan lotion or something like that. That said, although this is sweeter than le male, and i typically dont like sweet fragrances....i prefer this to le male vintage or otherwise. That jasmine in the joop really hooks me as i love jasmine.

All in all, i think at least in the vintage version this is objectively a well constructed and interesting fragrance that really took heavy risks by releasing this when they did. Between the historical, functional, and compositional aspects, i really appreciate joop homme and im glad i have an old bottle. I will definetely wear this.

I can wear this only when one spray is instantly layered with an equal application of Grey Flannel, which beats Joop into something resembling submission. It actually works well. But as Sean Connery said in The Hunt For Red October:

"One. Spray. Only."

Joop! Homme has been a part of my fragrance arsenal for over 33yrs and I'll always make sure I have plenty of bottles. I've purchased quite a few Lancaster versions over the yrs and it never disappoints. Longevity is eternal with help from the ever present Bergamot, which I swear is in almost every fragrance known to man, precious jasmine and sweet Heliotrope, right on down to that magical vanilla centered ending, this fragrance I think has shocked the fragrance world because I don't think the creators knew exactly what they had. It's no secret why this scent has been chugging along for over 30yrs and I can see it hanging around for at least another 30! This is one of the greatest and most misunderstood fragrances this side of Kouros. I'll never put it down no matter how old I get. It reminds me of a much better place and time and IMHO that's what a memorable fragrance is supposed to do.

Joop Home perfume is a manly and unique product with a warm character and a sweet scent that was unveiled and offered by the Joop brand in 1989. This perfume conveys the best feeling to you in autumn and winter seasons, and it is categorized under the oriental fragrance group of Fougere.
top note:Bergamot, citrus note, Mandarin,Orange Blossom.
Heart note: Cardamom, Cinnamon, Jasmin.
Base note: Patchouli, white Sandalwood, Tonka bean, Vanilla.

It's like a magical potion. Dark Gothic Heliotrope, contrasted with bright orange citrus notes. All of the notes listed here can be detected, and when they all mesh together during the dry-down, especially when the Patchouli starts to rise up, it's pure magic. What a GEM! I have the current formulation and I love it!

Sweet, abrasive cough syrup. I can tolerate it, but I wouldn't want to wear this for long. I've heard that it has been reformulated, so I will have to give it a few more tries to understand the composition. While the sillage might be good on others, I'm not going to spray this close to my nose.

Alright, what do we have here? A legendary powerhouse fragrance from 1989, made by German luxury fashion house Joop! specializing in contemporary clothing and cosmetics.

It's a polarizing fragrance, primarily because it's very sweet, complex and strong. If you don't over-spray it (1 spray under your shirt in the summer is enough, 2 regular sprays for colder days) it is actually quite smooth and you will recognize that it is very well blended. Yes, it is also fairly synthetic: it opens with a sweet tutti-frutti bubblegum scent and eventually it dries down revealing its potent base. And they put every Fougère note known to man in that base: Vanilla, sandalwood, tonka, patchouli, amber and musk... they are all here.

The projection with two sprays is really good, the longevity - even with the modern version - is out of this world. If you make a mistake and use too much it becomes incredibly dense and cloying, so you really don't want to do that. In my opinion, this is why some people complain about Joop! Homme. Used carefully (the sprayer is great and lets you easily control the amount you spray), this is a fun fragrance, especially good for colder weather. From my experience, most ladies of all ages really like this if you know how to wear it.

What else? The bottle is a classic, the potent magenta juice inside makes it stand out on the shelf, the sprayer is top notch and you get some mega-bang your your buck with this one. You can literally get it anywhere: $30 for a bottle of this at most Walmart stores. You can get it at discounters such as TJ Maxx or Ross for under $20 even. Basically, if you like sweet fragrances, you owe it to yourself to add this to your collection. It used to be incredibly popular in the 90s and early 00s, but not so much anymore. It will stand out in the crowd of people wearing modern sweet stuff like 1 Million, Ultra Male or Eros, and in my humble opinion, it's at least as good if not better than these fragrances.

If you do develop a taste for Joop! Homme, it's possible to find small 30ml bottles in a gift box at above-mentioned discount stores for less than $20, and that box also includes really good 50ml aftershave balm and a shower gel; they are not nearly as potent as the EdT, but they add to the whole experience. What a bargain this is!

TLDR version: great projection and longevity, good value for money, fun and complex sweet fragrance which you have to be careful not to over-spray. Recommended!

I used to wear Joop! Homme back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Back then I thought it was one of the best things I ever smelt, since then my tastes have matured and I have outgrown this fragrance. I still have a bottle that would be about 20 years old. Not much juice left and the distinctive magenta colour has changed to a darker shade. However the scent is the same and the performance is still amazing.
Imagine opening a packet of sweet, sickly jellybeans and sprinkling some of your grandad's pipe tobacco in there. That is Joop! Homme. Sweet, cloying vanilla with a hint of tobacco. There are other notes such as tonka bean, musk and orange. But the vanilla is the standout note throughout the life of the scent. As for longevity it is great and lasts 8 hours or longer on my skin, especially in the winter. It projects very well too leaving a good sillage trail for the first few hours of wear and projects at least arm length beyond then.
Joop! Homme is the only fragrance to date that I have received unsolicited negative feedback on. Possibly because back in the day I over-sprayed it maybe. Due to the strong performance be careful not to overdo it with Joop!, it can be cloying and tends to be divisive as a fragrance. Most people either love it or really dislike it and over-spraying can bring out the negative reactions in those who dislike it.
Joop! was a popular clubbing fragrance back in the 1990s and it used to be sold in department stores as a more pricey designer fragrance. These days Joop! Homme can be found quite cheap, and although it is over 30 years old, it would still pass as a clubbing fragrance and I believe there are some guys who still get compliments with it. Ultimately though, it's a strong cloying scent that has some appeal, but lacks maturity and refinement. Do not wear Joop! Homme to a job interview or in the office, or when meeting your girlfriend's parents for the first time. Wear it if you want a clubbing cheapy that is different to the Dior Sauvage, Versace Eros and 1 Million that 80% of the other guys at the club are wearing. Wear it to a party or rave, maybe wear it for a date but nothing too intimate or classy.
Overall I have mixed feelings about Joop! Homme, I used to love it and the scent still evokes some nostalgia. But I have definitely outgrown it and moved on. If Basenotes enabled me to give a 2.5 star rating then that is what I would give it. But I settled on 3 stars.

The opening to this smells like the cinnamon-flavored candy canes my mom would get during the holidays; it's not as sickly-sweet smelling as a lot people have said about it, but it's definitely a synthetic sweet-tooth. In addition to the Big Red gum cinnamon smell, there's an underlying herbal smell; like sniffing an incense stick before burning it.

I would strongly recommend NOT spraying more than 3-times on yourself! It can be cloying if you spray more than 3-times (especially on the neck beneath the jaw). I made the mistake of spraying this 4 times on myself; it felt like getting waterboarded with a tsunami made of melted cinnamon-scented Yankee candles. I didn't get a headache, but I did get a scratchy throat. So, yeah. In large doses, Joop becomes the vapor version of Sucrets.

I've heard that Joop Homme has been reformulated, and thus it's not quite the blaring, olfactory foghorn that cut through the thick air of raves and nightclubs it once did back in the early 90s. But, this Energizer Bunny of a fragrance is still an 8+ hour powerhouse. I'm convinced, that there are radioactive fallout materials with shorter half-lives than Joop Homme.

Joop Homme projects like crazy in 1st hour. Starts to taper off a little by hour 2. And, by hour 3 - it finally plateaus into smelling like a cinnamon fall/winter candle, lit with a blow torch at both ends. It is around this time that the sandalwood and amber make their presences known. And, it pretty much stays this way for 4-hours.

Around hour 8 - it starts to become a skin scent. But, whatever residual sillage still on your clothes will last well past hour 10.

People have classified Joop Homme as a fall/winter fragrance, and, I would tend to agree. However, if you insist on wearing this during the summer or warm/hot weather: wear this at night. This is a night-time fragrance, if I ever did smell one: perfect for bars, clubs, outdoor dining, bonfires, etc.

Despite the neutral rating: I give this a 3/5 stars. I don't love it. I don't hate it. I would've given it 2.5/5, but, I give it half a star because you can get this SUPER cheap; I got a 4.2oz bottle for under 20$; Testers are even less. Another reason, is, the longevity of this thing is...unbelievable.

That being said; I realize that I'm in the minority of being neutral on this one. This is a love-it-or-hate-it fragrance if there ever was one.

So, if you exercise caution, and stick to 1-2 sprays per application. And, you don't mind synthetic, cinnamon-flavored/candy-cane/gum/aromatic candle-smelling fragrances that easily lasts over 8hrs - this is for you.

If you took your idea of a serious cologne and combined it with “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” you'd get Joop!. I feel like Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka would have worn this. It can be polarizing and easily over-applied, but it is still pure genius. If you wanted to stir the pot, you might even argue that Joop! is the most well-blended of modern men's oriental fragrances. It is absurd and simultaneously absurdly good. All I can say is that wearing Joop! makes me happy.

Sorry for the verbosity. This ended up being more impactful on me than I expected.

Unusually for someone born in the early 80s, I never got much exposure to this scent, because it just wasn't my dad's deal. Mum would occasionally splurge to get dad Farenheit or Drakkar Noir, but generally speaking my Dad is a Brut guy.

So, I was a touch surprised when I went to visit Mum and Dad recently and saw bottle of bright magenta Joop! adorning the bathroom sill. The juice is literally the exact shade of one of my favourite crayolas from my childhood and very, very close to one of my sister's favourite skivvies. I got hit with an immediate flash of nostalgia seeing it.

Sweet, rich and unapologetically fruity and floral, this is just not what my dad would have worn back in the late 80s/early 90s when he was working in finance. Now that he's too old to bother impressing people and can give in to a bit of whimsy, he'll use it on occasion for his own entertainment, as will my mother.

And after giving it a test spray, I can see why. This is the olfactory equivalent of an ice cream mountain with every possible condiment liberally poured over the top. Even if I don't see myself wearing it out, the honeysuckle and cinnamon in particular are beautifully done.

Just like the ice cream mountain, after a respectable amount of time you start thinking "Oh god.... there's still so much MORE there..." and the inexplicable joy gives way to some rather justifiable fear.

Still though, I have to give Joop! some big respect for having the nerve to stick with their creative and marketing vision. Let's not forget that when this scent came out, homophobic slurs being exchanged around the water cooler was de rigueur and a lot of what would now be referred to as toxic masculinity was just "How sh*t was."

"Here's some bright pink fruity floral juice. Are you man enough to wear it?"

Has a new bottle meanwhile that blends in with the competition, what's inside however has remained the same I'm guessing.

I like a bit of controversy but I can't bring myself to like this one. It is difficult to dissect but here's my analysis: very strong peppery patchouli meets very sweet honeysuckle.

All the rest are background notes to me but combined they give an incensy vibe which patchouli and honeysuckle are sitting on top of.

Honestly, it can't be worn anywhere but in the comfort of your own home and for experimental purposes. Actually, you could mistake this for an interior perfume!

Speaking on the vintage formulation, this is a very complex fragrance with wonderful transitions. If you keep it to 1 spray, maybe 2, the drydown is amazing.

This instantly cheers my wife up, regardless of her current mood. I don't think there is a better "bedroom" scent out there, at least for her nose.

I'd be cautious to purchase any of the newer formulations, so I'm glad I'm stocked with enough vintage to last more than a lifetime...

I love challenging scents, and this one fits the bill. Kinda like 'Poison' for men. Strong yet soft, sweet, but powerful. Mysterious, yet cozy. One of my all-time fave frags. I also love its purple color and bottle. And, like others have said, this is one scent where a little goes a long way. It's potency is a big plus. Cool weather only, don't wear in summer.

I first discovered Joop! Pour Homme in the early 1990's and I remember being confused as to whether it was for women or men (pink liquid, super sweet, etc). I didn't know the difference between Eau de Toilette or Pour Homme or Parfum. I liked the scent, and two dabs on the neck lasted the entire day. This is one of the most powerful and potent scents you will come across in an EDT concentration. A true 80's and early 90's powerhouse in every sense of the word.

The initial blast is a wonderful blend of vanilla, cherry, amber and tonka bean, which projects extremely well and is quite sexy for a vanilla and cherry based men's fragrance. It is synthetic, and can be somewhat offensive in the first hour as it projects at least ten feet away and is very sweet and syrupy until it settles down.

After the first couple hours, this scent becomes a masterpiece. The amber comes out and balances out the cherry and vanilla notes. It smells very sweet but also very potent and masculine. A base of musk, tonka bean, vanilla, amber carries on throughout the life of this fragrance, and it smells better the longer you wear it.

With a liberal application of about ten sprays to the neck, chest, wrists and shoulders, I usually get a fantastic 15-18+ hours of longevity, with several days and even weeks on clothes and fabrics. After the first ten hours, it calms down but still projects really well, especially in cold weather. Even with a modest six sprays, this will last you easily over 10-12+ hours.

It performs superbly in spring and fall weather, especially outdoors, but is better suited for colder weather as the sweetness can be cloying in high summer heat. Sillage is powerful on this juice. This is a perfect nightclub, night on the town, evening out type of fragrance. And I always get compliments from gorgeous ladies and even guys when I wear this. Women love sweet, gourmand scents and especially amber based fragrances, so Joop! fits perfectly.

All in all, this is a fantastic scent that never fails to get compliments whenever I wear it. This is for a well dressed, clean shaven, muscular, preppy and intelligent man who is confident and comfortable enough to wear a pink polo shirt with club shorts and loafers. Love it or hate it, you either have what it takes to wear this scent or you don't. It is a true classic, and a masterpiece in my opinion. Highly recommended.

as well as what another guy said,
This Fragrance smells like Hair Spray.
I'm glad I tested it 1st, because I sure was gonna buy it after seeing all the Basenotes in it.

This fragrance is not for the average nose. That's why there're so many negative reviews about it. It's a very complex fragrance, and you really need to understand about perfumes and have experience in order to truly appreciate it.
First and obviously, you can't spray too much of it, 3 sprays is the maximum. Otherwise it will become overwhelming. Like a poison, where dosing is the key.
Anyway, the drydown is totally killer on this fragrance. Insanely amazing. Shortly after you spray it you don't get the true beauty of it, but after like 3 or 4 hours you get the true amazing effect of this perfume. I have almost 40 fragrances on my personal collection, and I think this must be one of the most sensual fragrances I've ever worn. And it's top 3 on my collection on the sensuality department. I believe only the vintage M7 can rival it on this, among all my personal collection. Xeryus Rouge could try as well, but I believe it would be behind.
The orange blossom is really noticeable on this fragrance, and key on it. It turns into a very deep, warm, sensual and involving smell after the drydown, about 3~4 hours. I keep trying to decipher all of it's notes, this fragrance is that complex. It's a combination of flowers, vanilla, sandalwood, cinnamon that truly is amazing. If you sweat slightly, you will feel the power of it. What is more impressive is that this was made in 1989, a time where the norm was the very manly oak-moss heavy fragrances. It was so much ahead of its time.
Anyway, I am still trying to figure out this fragrance completely, I started wearing it only a few days ago, and had it in my collection for years. Didn't wear it before only because of pre-judgement based on other people's negative opinions. Don't be like me, try this yourself and get your own conclusions, don't bother about what you read on the internet.
Just don't go under the sun with it, I think it's not the best environment for it.

A very nice and very different smell which cannot be mistaken for anything else ... a real head-turner. I first came across it in 1994 ... It was very strong, lasted for ages, could be smelt from far and received positive remarks.
I bought it a few months ago but either this was a fake or out of date because it was weak and could not smell it after 30 minutes or so... My partner used it up on a daily basis to deodorize the bed cover so we used it all up.
My review is for the original as I remember it
