YSL La Nuit de L'Homme EDT (current) -

I have no reference to vintage, but I'm perfectly happy with the current version. I have read plenty-o tales of whoa about reformulation, lack of projection, blah, blah, blah. That's cool; I just want it to smell good on and around me.

The opening is spicy and bright, and then after warming up a bit, the darker "La Nuit" vibe begins to make its move. This juice made its bones as being the easy reach for date nights, correct? Well then, skin scent me, thank you very much.

3.5 / 5 stars

Update:

I had no plans to acquire deep vintage, but stumbled upon a great opportunity for a 2010 bottle. The opening is quite similar to the original vintage L'Homme, possible just a bit less herbal. From there is smells very close to the current La Nuit as it moves through the mid, just behaving a bit "softer." The drydown is very good and natural smelling, where the current can be more abrasive, but only if you bury your nose into the area where you sprayed.

In the air, the current version is still very good! Projection is low for both versions so don't go chasing vintage thinking it will be a clubber. Longevity is good for both versions.

Overall, I recommend the vintage if you can find a bottle without having to sell off a kidney first to pay for it. I reckon $175 or less for 100ml is perfectly reasonable.

La Nuit de L'Homme was released in 2009 and was one of the first fragrances I got to experience, and I had no idea how lucky I was at the time.

...

Le Fantôme de La Nuit de L'Homme is all we have left. 65% of the DNA is still there, which is somehow still leagues better than the best sellers we have nowadays.

This fragrance feels a bit overrated to me, but I haven't smelled the original formulations, so I'll never understand the hype. The cardamom or lavender doesn't really smell realistic or natural to me, but the combination is okay. There's a bit of a powdery element, but it's just the softness of all the notes mingling together.

There are far better scents that recreate the note of lavender or cardamom. This might be one of the scents that gets you into fragrances, and you can either stop there or continue finding better ones. For the average guy, I wouldn't complain if this was their signature scent. It's decent for every season except for summer, and maybe you can sneak a spray in during cool summer evenings or nights.

You'll be able to find this at nearly every store, so test before you buy. I would give this an average rating. It will work fine as a gift.

Ignore the bad reviews. This fragrance is still mighty fine. The dry down is special and unique. In a way, I’m glad some crazy people hate it now since the reformulation because it just means there’s more for me to have. It’s best to pair with the same La Nuit aftershave. With the aftershave, it becomes a bit more masculine and it contributes to a stronger projection but not too much. It’s obvious to me that fragrance reviewers suffer from olfactory fatigue. If you’re not the neurotic elitist type, this EDT smells fantastic and I think the price is fine especially if you get the 6oz. I like the opening and it really is a skin scent which is not a bad thing especially for a darker sexier fragrance. The dry down is lovely and your significant other will want to be close to you (see why skin scents are a good idea?), If you can pair it with the aftershave balm that comes in the glass bottle, I highly recommend the combination. I haven’t tried the aftershave lotion but it should have the same enhancing effects as the balm.

A great fragrance, masculine, refined, sexy. The opening with that cardamon is amazing, tempered with some bergamot it is perfect. As it dries down it takes on a somewhat powdery character to my nose, almost like tonka or musk, although they are not in La Nuit de L'Homme. Possibly I am getting the lavender with the warmth of the amber. Either way it works very well. This is a fragrance that I would definitely buy again and keep as a regular in my stable. It is a very good date night fragrance but it is not too bold to wear at work. It lasts about 4 or 5 hours of my skin projection is average for the first couple of hours then it remains close to the skin. So overall, an excellent scent, reasonably versatile with average performance. It also garners some compliments occasionally.

When it first came out, oh my God... Worth every dollar. I have recently bought another bottle and was very disappointed. It feels like it has been dilluted, like when you add too much water to an orange juice. No sillage to it whatsoever. I have to smell it directly from my skin and it smells like it was sprayed yesterday. The price is ridiculous. RIP La Nuit De L'Homme! Look how they massacred my boy.

This is quite a complex sent. Opening with a burst of cardamom, peony, and Bergamot, and drying with a very soft Amber and strong Vetiver.

It's citric tones give it a rather unisex vibe, with a lingering question: is this is exclusively a late night fragrance, or perhaps a “later in the afternoon” fragrance?

Vibes: Sporty. Marine. Athletic. Mid 20's. Creative. Vintage. Social.

Sillage is incredibly dull, with a delicate projection. Dries floral, with hints of citric, cream, and wood.

Once in a while, when you're indulging yourself in some Indian food, some of the spices that have been used to flavour the rice are left in with it.

You might be merrily munching your way through your basmati/bhuna combination, your attention entirely drawn by the wonders of Saturday night TV, blithely unaware of what is about to befall you. . .

The memory of the cardamom pod which flavours rice so well appears in rude existence in your mouth, being crushed between your molars.

If you like the sound of that, you'll like this - it's like hair lice shampoo with crushed cardamom pods. Otherwise steer well clear. I'm afraid, on me, this was an immediate trip to the bathroom to scrub it off.

It's pleasant. I mean how can it not be. A coumarin sweetness and aromatic cedarwood. The top notes fade fast though so La Nuit de l'Homme in the end is mainly about the coumarin and wood. Some amber too.

However, it will not differ that much from any other lower ranking EdT that packs the same notes. We used to have a fragrance from Garnier here that was close to this but it's been discontinued for over a decade. Maybe YSL bought it?

If anything, going by the scent alone then price wise it should sit just slightly above the highest priced (non-designer) drugstore fragrances (Garnier, Daniel Hechter and the likes). I say above, because it does still come from YSL. But it's priced at 70EUR/80USD here for 100ml?

That's too expensive for this tier of scent. There is for example a fragrance from another Yves (Rocher) that has similar notes but sells for 50'ish USD/100ml. It's been a while since I've smelled it though but I remember it was going for around 20 USD even 10-15 years ago.

La Nuit De L'Homme seems to me to be the logical conclusion to this discussion at corporate headquarters:

"Hey, remember Rive Gauche? It has a huge following among fragrance nerds, so it must be good. Let's make a version of it that would sell really well at Macy's!"

It's a spicier, scratchier, more accessible version of Rive Gauche, in my eyes. I think it's a decent scent, it performs well, and it's not overly-synthetic, though in the beginning it does border on being cloying. It really comes across as a barbershop fougere, but one that you wear when you're having a romantic evening. This is "date night" fragrance. I can't really think of any other time where it would be appropriate, which is kind of a shortfall, as Rive Gauche does what this does, but better, and it is more versatile than La Nuit de l'Homme by a country mile.

All in all, it's a decent scent, but one that I won't be adding to my collection.

This is really pleasant, and to me, inoffensive. I get the feeling that others consider it a spicy, assertive fragrance better suited for a night out than a casual setting. But, I could completely see myself wearing this at the office. Maybe it's because this plays with lavender and I already have a boozier sophisticated lavender scent in my collection (Fahrenheit Parfum), that I'd use for those special occasions.

Not sure if the projection or longevity are particularly awesome as it did feel like a skin scent within a couple hours. Overall it smells nice and is certainly worth checking out, but right now there's nothing about this that screams "I need a bottle!".

A lot of lavender and bergamont, a jagged yet not unpleasant opening. Strong citrus and amber as well, with lots of woodsy-cedar waiting in the background to round it out. A bit thick, too syrupy-sweet on the opening: artificial and synthetic, not for everyone.

As it dries down, it becomes more earthly, organic: a more lush vetiver. I enjoy the drydown and wish it projected more. Speaking of, the overall projection is above average, more than an arm's length and the longevity is a bit below average: 3-4 hours until it's a complete skin scent.

This scent is a young man's game: it's strong and assertive, trying to make a point and letting everyone know. Overall, I like the scent but the heaviness of its citrusy overtones and the overall synthetic nature of it makes me shy away from constant use.

I really like this juice.

I'd yet to find a lavender frag that did anything for me, but this one is blended so well that I might consider my mind changed. If you're a fan of The One, you'll like YSL La Nuit.

Dive deep into the reviews for this one, sure. But I think you could blind buy this and be ok (and I don't say that a lot). I have a hard time imagining someone not liking something about this.

It has a wide application range, but only for shorter encounters. The performance on this one is around five or six hours, and the strength has a fairly quick drop-off. Applied at 8:30 this morning this frag is gone by the time I get back from lunch.

I see this as more of an evening cologne, regardless of season.

Wear it on a date (not a first date), spray it on your dinner jacket before an event, wear it for close encounters, wear it at night when it's just you, your chair, your pipe. You can pull this off with a suit, but there might be a better choice.

I think I'll try the Parfum when this bottle dies.

Scent: 8/10

La Nuit de L'Homme (2009) was confirmation of the success Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme (2006) had as an adequate replacement pillar for the Tom Ford-era Rive Gauche Pour Homme (2003), and although it wasn't the first flanker (beaten by L'Homme Eau d'Été releases in 2007 and 2008), La Nuit de L'Homme was the first flanker to really do something different with the L'Homme DNA, and ultimately surpassed the pillar's popularity. Many old school YSL fanboys may not have liked the L'Homme line at the time, because the throwback fougère nature of Rive Gauche Pour Homme was hoped to be a return to the familiar by many a vintage masculine fan, but La Nuit de L'Homme's futuristic clean use of a lavender tonka fougère accord abolished that hope in one fell swoop. La Nuit de L'Homme sought to rectify the "metrosexual office scent" lean of L'Homme by introducing some sensuality and heft to the formula, reuniting all three perfumers Ann Flipo, Pierre Wargnye, and Dominique Ropion in the process. La Nuit de L'Homme is clearly in the same creative compromises ball field as the original three-way tango of the first L'Homme, but it's sweeter, richer, more coumarin-heavy base is complimented with increased aromatics and spices. Out is the violet leaf and citrus apple accord of L'Homme, in is old-fashioned bergamot and lavender but treated more sparingly than in the old days. The results of this swap, plus a more paired-down note pyramid makes for a less synthetic-smelling scent (whether it is actually less synthetic or not), but also a more basic one that resonates better in a romantic setting.

La Nuit de L'Homme opens with cardamom and bergamot, with tendrils of a soft, round French lavender infused with hidden blackcurrant note creeping up from the middle almost instantly, bridging top and middle. We were in the very beginning stages of norlimbanol "karmawood" usage here, so expect it's telltale scratchiness here, and it kinda creeps in like an olfactory glue alongside a real cedar note to pad things out in the wood department, but it's not all that scratchy thanks to the sweet calone-inflected lavender and cardamom top/middle. The mostly-musk base of La Nuit de L'Homme does the bulk of the grunt work in the wear time of the scent, with an older-style amber composite note still in use instead of what would have been ambroxan if this released but a few years later, and a noticeable musk ambrette vibe thanks to ambrette seed, but thanks to the strong coumarin note present, hides somewhat behind the tonka to smooth it all over with a drop of oakmoss. La Nuit de Homme feels like the fougère version of L'Homme to wear out when attending an upscale sushi bar or gastro pub instead of a fine traditional steakhouse or five-star Italian cuisine joint. Perfumers Ropion, Flipo, and Wargnye made sure this retains all the sweet youthful appeal of the original L'Homme despite it's slightly more-serious tone, so there really isn't much air of formality to make this the kind of romantic scent you'd wear in an Eric Segal novel, but more of the casual kisses shmoo-shmoo that you'd see in a Nicholas Sparks book. My only complaint is how heavy the coumarin and amber is here, border-lining on syrupy grossness but never hitting the levels of Thierry Mugler A*Men Pure Tonka (2016), which keeps this scent in the green for me. Simply put, this is to the dinner date what Paco Rabanne 1 Million (2008) is to the night club: a youthful low-risk option to replace many of the more-divisive venerated ones that could have served in years past.

The person who likes L'Homme will certainly like La Nuit de L'Homme, but the person who doesn't like L'Homme may still enjoy La Nuit de L'Homme anyway because it's almost a completely different set of notes creating a darker, more intense, less apologetic version of the original crowd-pleaser scent, which saw most of it's criticism take the form of being too boring or weak. La Nuit de L'Homme shows what the L'Homme formula might have been like had it come out as a powerhouse in the 1980's, but honestly even then it would probably be deeper and louder with tons of oakmoss or benzoin, so I mean this only in aesthetic. La Nuit de L'Homme is definitely no work scent unless you work in a nightclub as a bartender or something similar. Nights out or at home seem the best place for La Nuit de L'Homme, and if for some reason this dark horse isn't strong enough for you, YSL even released an intense and parfum versions of it since this flanker has received it's own line of flanker-flankers! Honestly, I wouldn't think about this one too much past what it is: a darker and richer L'Homme with slightly improved performance taking it a notch up from the original in sillage, if not longevity. There are some huge zealots out there claiming that pre-IFRA batches (with more oakmoss) are literally the only ones worth wearing, and this simply isn't true, as oakmoss was never a huge player to begin with in this; and even though reduced even further past 2011, the remaining scent is still quite enjoyable for anyone liking modern fougères made to cut up a rug or sit by the fireplace and snuggle. I concede older batches wore heavier, though. Just classy stuff that would have made Yves Saint Laurent himself smile, had he lived another year to see it. Thumbs up

A reference for the sweet, almost unisex modern date night scent but also just nice to wear whenever because its. I wear this in warm or cool conditions as long as its at night, that's just my preference.

The cardamom is the main note that really stands out but the pleasant cedar and warm amber make this the scent that others like and want to get close to.

Performance is average. Probably just right for someone that only wants to be noticed up close. I get about 5 hours on my skin.

Easily a top 10 for my wardrobe. Nothing bad to say about this. Amber and Cedar really come out for me on this one and it's quite a relaxing scent for any time and any situation.

Lovely fragrance. So versatile!! Okay so it suffers some performance issues especially after various reformulations but this is one fragrance where I can overlook that problem.

It's nothing ground breaking and certainly not niche or abstract smelling in any way. It's a fragrance that I just love the smell of. So comforting and pleasing. Cardamom and lavender are the stand out notes. I sort of feel embarrassed for rating this one so highly as it is regarded by many as a young mans pulling fragrance thanks to a certain Youtube reviewer. But the truth is....Many of the people that have commented on this fragrance have always said how sophisticated and professional it smells. That's good enough for me. We can all have our guilty pleasures can't we??

Gathers many compliments from Men and Women, remains both sexy and sophisticated.

Just a tip for those that miss the original formula.

Tip 1 - Spray the fragrance onto unscented lotion and clothes. This will help to prolong the scent.

Tip 2 - The newer formulation has the cardamom toned down which was something that made this scent so wonderful. Buy yourself some cardamom essential oil and add a few drops to your lotion/skin. It will remind you of the good old days!!

It seems like everyone likes this , women especially .
Its a very pleasent scent , that can be easily worn, i prefer to wear this evening only . Its a more modern subtle evening wear scent
its a 8/10 for me .
Very easy to wear , and safe to buy .
Only down part of this scent is that i am smelling more and more often ..
Its not unique anymore ..
But its still a winner !

I am always surprised by the batch hysteria this 'frag' seems to generate, as to me it has always been a vile chemical concoction with good presence. It should win some formal accolades for bearing the most artificial lavender accord in a perfume.

There is also a strong cardamom note. Lavender and cardamom smell great. La Nuit does not, and actually manages to become increasingly grating on skin.

Honestly somewhat uncultured, and lacks in grace and sophistication. That is absolutely fine (variety is the spice of life), but not when it is pretentious, trying to fit in, and costs ten times as much as it should.

L'Homme is one of my favorite everyday scents, and La Nuit is a little stronger with a slightly spicier, much more seductive top-mid with the recognizable L'Homme mid-base. The gradual/linear dry down is also similar. La Nuit fades about twice as fast on me (4-6 hours) as L'Homme (8-10 hours), but that's actually better for a night out -- a strong start is more important than extreme longevity.

Nice inoffensive scent. The Cardamom makes it more enjoyable. It's not too sweet but definitely adds to that sexy vibe a lot of new fragrances are going for. The vetiver is not over-powering and the fragrance warms up over time. The lack of notes gives it a transparent quality where the top notes don't quite disappear. I can see why some guys say it's popular with the ladies because it's more on the sweet side. This is a mild recommendation.
