I am reviewing a vintage cologne mini. I am at first struck by the balance and blending. Expecting something more raw and in your face, I instead inhale a lovely soft floral bouquet, which at the same time is spicy without being pungent or sharp. Top: Bergamot, Geranium, Carnation, Rosemary; Middle: Neroli, Nutmeg, Jasmine, Lavender, Clove, Rose.
The base notes are most impressively blended for the dry down: Base: Patchouli, Cypress, Vetiver.
It's very much of its period (1921) - beware the reformulations from 1960 onwards. Soft and feminine, but at the same time sultry and spicy.
Myrurgia was the Barcelona-based equivalent of Guerlain in Spain, its first and some say still its best fragrance house.
Maja is a lovely scent, quite unisex and appropriate for all occasions.
Second Edit - Upon more exposure to this, I am reminded very much of Lanvin's Mon Peche (My Sin), which followed three years later.

I have been wearing this scent since the early 1980's. It has changed. It is still a great go-to fragrance.
It used to be spicier, more tart. Carnation, cloves, rose, geranium, and lavender do make a compelling combination. Throw in some citrus and you have a traditional oriental with old-fashioned flair. Maja is a perfect casual scent that is perfect for spring, summer, or autumn.
If you can find the eau de parfum or pure perfume, jump on it. These formulas project more strongly. I currently only have the e.d.t.

I am such a lucky lady.
I started reviewing my perfume collection & thinking about Basenotes the day I found a lovely vintage box with 2 soaps & unopened Maja scent FROM SPAIN at my favorite thrift store.
I have to admit that I was so sensuously greedy I opened the bottle to wear it. You only live once, you know. (I had had a Maja mini long ago).
The scent is frisky & spicy...oranges, roses, clove....like Mediterranean sunshine, or like a wonderful pomander, in the middle of winter.

I used to wear this fragrance many years ago and I loved it. I forgot about it for a while and happened upon the new 'improved' version - vile. The old fragrance was the same as the soap and totally unlike the current version. I'd prefer that they actually discontinue a fragrance rather than butcher it the way they have.
I have loved the soap for years. But when I tried the EdT I was somewhat disappointed, it just doesn't have the zing of the soap scent. Too bad!
I remeber 13 or 14 years ago i'v recieved a colonge splash version of this perfume. and i remeber it was more
spicer Stronger with more Incense and more Peppery and i fell in love with

Perfumer Antonio Puig of the great Spanish firm of Puig Fragrances now controls Myrurgia the greatest Spanish fragrance house. Maya is a classic Spanish scent which was composed in 1921. It is spicy, deep, floral, and more intense than French styled composition. As a teenager at the beginning of the 1960's I was intrigued by the Spanish opulance of Myrurgia advertisements and smapled their wares in department store. I only remember Maya which smelled exotic and complex. This review is about the Maya soap. It is available in nicely packaged cakes and also in a handsome round and black container which looks much more interesting and formal than any other readily available liguid soap. Maya in liguid soap is a white liguid approaching an olive oil lotion. It is very fragrant and opulent and spicy and floral. It is a bit sharp in opening but not harsh. It works very nicely as a soap and though it seems to condition, it leaves no residue.Maya soap imparts a lasting fragrance. If you use enough in concentration with your water, it lingers on the face and hands very close in strength to an after shave of some depth. It is a dark and spicy floral but it is not inappropriate for men. It is a svent that conveys beauty and strength. May reminds me of Paloma Picasso's signature scent in its deep and dark floral and spicy design. They do not smell alike but they are alike.Best of all, Maya liguid soap in a perfectly designed and very handsome black container can be purchased at K Mart for about $4.00. You will either love the scent or find it too strong and dislike it. Maya may be inexpensive but Antonio Puig and his company have managed to continue the Mrurgia tradition of complex fragrances in the rich Spanish tradition.
This smells soapy spicey to me I 'm trying the lotion and EDT together .Spicey-clean pleasant anyone (age/gender)could probably wear this.Florals aren't too strong(slightly more soapy-floral on drydown) a man might wear/compare this to Stetson or Polo Black.Parfume or EDP levels--I don't know, haven't tried yet.
I was really surprised. I tried this in 70o heat of spring and wasn't expecting much. It wasn't overbearing, like I thought it would be. It was spicy and subtle believe it or not. I think this could be pulled off during any season. thumbs up.
The soap is an good old favorite, never tire of it.The talcum powder smells surprisingly strong and reminds me of J&J babypowder, and one cannot go wrong with either one.The perfume is too heady for me but classy for others. The EdT spray is very nice, invigorating almost like a men's cologne but rounder. It sits well on the skin and lasts the whole day.I even waste some of it as an air freshener because it smells to good and will thus make potpourri aromas for the house.
I've used the Maja soap for a long time - it leaves a lovely soft scent - powdery, spicy and woody. But the perfume is harsh and unpleasant. I bought a bottle thinking I would like it because I adore the soap, but the perfume is not to my liking - I would rate this thumbs up for the soap, but the perfume brings me down to neutral. So far all of the soap I've purchased comes from Spain, and I've not had a chance to try the product as made in Mexico. The Spanish soap product is great. And the talc is quite nice too.
This is a review of Maja lotion. Having never smelled the original formulation, I think this Maja is just fine! It is spicy, floral, and a little bit soapy, in good harmony. I don't know that I would ever wear the perfume, but this lotion is one of the best perfumed creams I've ever used, especially for the price. No complaints here!
OK, I take back my negative review. Revisited Maja this week, the same bottle I reviewed back when, and newly appreciate it as a woody floral with some spice. I don't perceive any connection to the original Maja, but do appreciate it on its own terms. It is not sweet, but manages to be both bracing and comforting. Maybe what connects it to the old Maja is a Spanish esthetic. Whatever. I'm wearing and enjoying it.

Reformulated! And not in a good way! I loved the old carnation-y spicy/floral Maja. The new Maja (tall thin bottle, I bought in 2006) smells like cheap aftershave.

This is another of my mom's favorites that I'm beginning to think that she really likes stinking! I mean, okay, this is better than Emeraude, Tabu, patchouli oil....but, not by much! It's heavy, spicy and too much like incense! You know, like those triangle incense thingies you light on fire to smoke out your house? Yeah, those stinky things! Or those tall and thin stick things you burn.........yuck! Thank god she likes the soap better, as it's more nose friendly!
I have used Maja soap for many years. I recently opened my last bar out of an old stash. I bought some anew and when I opened it - whew! It is now made in Mexico for the North American Market and it is INFERIOR. The soap is flaky and fragile and the top note is not the same. Try to buy from europe.
This one is a nice deep dark carnation scent easy to find, inexpensive and worth having if you collect perfumes. The soaps and talc are nice also.
One of my Grandma's favorites. Very powdery; somewhat dark. I don't get the "kerosene" note at all. Think that longevity is a bit of an issue, but am not sure. (I've never worn it myself, but think that a man COULD pull it off if he had the confidence.) The juice itself is certainly reasonable enough.
Lovely, green, herbal and powdery at once. Right up until the kerosene odor comes in. I almost was really liking this one. :(
