Reviews of Sandalwood by D.R. Harris & co.

This is not a fancy perfume, it is a rugged and rustic long-lasting fragrance. Emphasis on woods and camphor, no floral or fruity here. Fantastic for the cheerful outdoorsman and curmudgeonly indoorsman.

This is a review of the Aftershave which is a old formula and still for sale but more vibrant and intense than the cologne. I've recently found out the cologne version is a new formula and weaker. It pales it comparison and only lasts forty minutes compared to four hours that the aftershave gives you!

The first thing that hits you is a blast of medicinal anise which is fresh followed by a big woody cedar note when the blast calms down.In the first half hour when the big cedar note is present you can smell soft slightly powdery spices with that spice note from old spice. Yes it's here as well but does not dominate, smells great.

Also the camphor in this makes the cedar smell like those strips from cigar boxes. So if you can imagine a dance of woody soft spices with that old spice note around a highlighted cedar note. And then when the soft Sandalwood appears smelling like soft Japanese incense, everything smells so great. The Sandalwood also smells like the note in Carven Homme, I'm getting that impression. Lovely soft spicy woods.

Soon after a light patchouli note can be picked up with the woods. Mixed in with this is a light neroli accord giving the fragrance a earthy woodiness and a light floral freshness.

I have to say it smells very very nice. Also the aftershave gives my face a really nice moisturising effect to such a degree that I don't need to apply a balm. Happy days! lol

Compared to Trumpers Sandalwood this is dry and earthy with light fresh floral undertones with woody notes which are very masculine and front and centre. Where as the Trumper scent is very sweet and loud.

The strength is quite decent that you can wear this as a light cologne, I've been wearing it for about four hours and can still smell gentle wafts from the lovely soft Sandalwood.

So all in all it's a very lovely scent that's versatile as you can use it as a aftershave or wear it as a light cologne with the added benefit that it moisturises your skin really well. Big thumbs up from me!

From the beginning the wood notes dominate. I get a very nice sandal, and it a discrete sandal like all the good ones are, especially those with a bit of the real stuff. Also, mercifully the sandal, quite restrained anyway, is not smothered with cedar as in so many other fragrances; the cedar is discrete too. Hints of patchouli and a white pepper add gentle spiciness, not unlike Bois de Santal does but a bit coarser here.

Overall this is a delight; with moderate sillage, very good projection and a splendid eleven hours of longevity on my skin.

A great autumnal sandalwood creation, and after the discontinuation of Floris Sandalwood one of the leading British Sandalwood fragrances. 3.75/5

Just a heads-up: This aftershave seems to have been reformulated recently (it comes in the familiar Harris white box but with a redesigned label). I picked up a bottle after sniffing the tester at the Pasteur Pharmacy in NYC.

I think it might actually be nicer than the original--an unusual occurrence. It seems smoother and slightly more floral. I notice on the EU-required ingredients label that, in addition to the ubiquitous linalool, coumarin, geraniol, citronellol, eugenol and citral, it contains essential oils of patchouli and neroli. Those could easily explain the increased smoothness and floralcy.

This starts with a nuclear explosion of medicinal spices, mainly clove, possibly mint. Once the mushroom cloud starts to dissipate, the subtle sandalwood becomes more detectable. From about 2 hours in, there's a steady low-level radiation of dry spices and this continues for several hours as the sandalwood fades out. Not a bad scent, and it performs as you would expect for an aftershave, but the santal is a bit too shy, especially in comparison to its rowdy company.

This has a very traditional barbershop/wet-shaving aspect that makes it instantly feel retro/vintage/reminiscent of smelling aftershave on an older male relative when a child kind of vibe.
It is powerful, traditionally masculine and to start with feels a little like it might be selected "ironically" rather than with actually "smelling good" in mind.
However, I used it for a while, then skipped to some more "refined" scents and when I came back to it I was really surprised just how good it smells.
Great after a trad shave (safety or cut-throat) - just the right level of sting and yes - it really does smell good.
Now half way through a bottle I know I will be replacing once gone...
Good value too.

First off this is an aftershave and should be reviewed as such. That said, for an aftershave this stuff has EdC like strength (ie several hours). Sandalwood in the name is a misnomer as there really isn't any in there. What I get is a big spicy, woody concoction. The initial blast of spices is heavy and a bit cloying, but then it dries down into a woody, less spicy base. Although this is an alcohol splash, it contains a lot of moisturizing ingredients and because of that it is one of my favorites.

I have the aftershave and when I use it my girls say, "mmm... you smell like a man!"

this is very strong for an aftershave and surprisingly moisturizing. Hard to detect the sandalwood, but I guess its in there somewhere. I wished it lasted longer though. As an aftershave, its the best I've ever used. As a cologne though, its only weakness is its longevity.

This is among the first fragrances (aftershave) I've purchased blindly online. It starts out with a bit too much going on...like boiling cinnamon, nutmeg, and cough medicine in a kettle. A little goes a very long way with this stuff!!! Very strong especially for an aftershave. There is plenty of spice to this in the begining, a bit overwhelming but very masculine. The drydown is where this stuff shines, simmering down to a nice cinnamon-amber scent with everpresent notes of patcholli. Put this on in the morning, and you'll be washing it off in the shower at night...once dried down, this stuff does NOT wear off. Overall a pleasant, old fashonied, gourmet Old Spice, very masculine scent...worth the money though!

This is a killer sandalwood and by killer, I do mean that it kills--the wearer that is. I tried this in aftershave concentration and it lasted all day and after a shower even and I only dabbed a little on my hand, too. The opening is peppery and medicinal and then the sweet, incense-like sandalwood kicks in.

D. R. Harris's Sandalwood has some attractive elements but it is BIG and spicy. It is woody, somewhat dry but also a bit cloying and heavy. It smells like an old wooden chest that has had spices stored in it for a few decades. It evokes the glory days of the original Old Spice sort of scents… definitely old-school. Powdery dry-down, with amber, clovey spice and sweet musk. Not my style but certainly a classic.

This is an absolutely wonderful sandalwood cologne that is warm, rich, subtle and gentlemanly. It is very natural smelling and would be welcome in personal as well as business contexts. It is at once mildy astringent in almost a healing sense, yet mellow and rich on the drydown. The sandalwood is as good as it gets. It reminds me somewhat of the much more expense Sandalumm by Profumum, which is a bit more bitter, and forward. This is an old-fashioned cologne that bespeaks heritage, tradition, and the often sought-after barbershop smell. It is a tad oily. Men should be flocking to any place they can get this. Unfortunately, the only places I can think of are the London shoppe on St. James's near Jermyn St. and a couple of the specialty pharmacies in NYC that advertise carrying hard to find fragrances. In any event if one is lucky enough to find it, one should try it, then buy it. This is truly a hiddent gem.
