Reviews of Spanish Leather by Truefitt & Hill

This is an excellent fragrance and I believe far and away the best from Truefitt. Firstly, I think it has significant natural components which make it warm, friendly and comfortable. It doesn’t have unitary-eternal-shower-proof chemical endurance like eg Grafton (which smells great but never changes) but instead develops naturally as a fragrance should through layers of integrated goodness.
It’s not meant to smell like leather itself, but the perfume that was used to scent leather in Spain. I can’t attest to the accuracy of that - but this smells of spice and citrus up front, with a big woody/cedar and patchouli with some geranium, softened with resinous notes, musk and vanilla underneath. The overall accord is an excellent fougere. Robust yet soft and elegant.
I’m a big fan.

Best on the market as far as my nostrils go.
"Reminds me of a stronger Sex Appeal" ha ha, thats a good start.
Fresh leather with hints of citrus and base notes of cedar, a long lasting scent that always seems to get raised eyebrows and compliments where-ever I wear it. Lasts up to 5-6 hours, quite strong to begin with, but a good eye - opener on the lazy tube trip to work.

Another member I know proclaimed this stuff to be completely devoid of leather, and I see what he meant in the sense of how soapy and sweet it is. The very top notes are surpsingly dry and citrusy, with spices way down underneath as in Trafalgar. The lavender comes out in front, so as usual I feel like I need to wait it out, but it doesn't take long for a sweet resinous leather/soap to emerge, with spices similar to those in Bel Ami but not as overdone. It does get sweeter and soapier into the mid notes, and less truly leathery, but for those of you like me who hate things as nightmarishly sweet and floral as Creed Royal English Leather, it's not nearly that strong. Still, a little bit of the bubblegum note from REL is in here, and it gives a slight candy vibe which I could do without. There's a lot of vanilla in the base as well, which doesn't help. This fragrance is trying to wear many hats, and not entirely succeeding with all of them. I think it's trying to have more leather content than Trumper's ill-named Spanish Leather, but it doesn't quite know how to do it. Ultimately, I still like it because the end result of this failed multitasking is a very creamy wood fragrance, close to Davidoff's Zino, but you have to be careful with it because it's so sweet.

A spicy and sweet opening that quickly develops into a castile soap smell. This becomes more pronounced as the scent develops with some underlying musk present. Way too soapy for me and I detect absolutely no leather. I much prefer GFT version as at least there is some leather undertones in that and it smells more like saddle soap.

Spanish Leather = a light Kouros Fraicheur.Wears close to the skin like an after-shave. Doesn't last long, which is typical for Truefitt & Hill fragrances. Why settle for this when there's so much better out there?

Very soapy, spicy and sweet, possibly a bit on the musky side to be an "everyday" cologne for me. Seems to have an awful lot going on for the entire duration of the fragrance, but with the soapy element getting stronger and muskier as it progresses.Overall it's not bad, but it just feels a little cluttered. It's as if they ran out of ideas so decided to chuck every spice they had in, but in tiny individual quantities. The end result is both slightly confusing and disappointingly underpowered, treading the fine line between "not enough" and "too much." It creates a nicely refined vibe, but I have no idea when I would want to wear this - too refined for daytime, too casual and ever so slightly "cheap" smelling for formal or eveningwear. It would make a really nice scent for a bath soap (which I believe T&H make), or a scented candle (which they don't), but as a cologne, it's not quite where it aims to be.Longevity is around 4-6 hours on me, but it projects very well, as I find most leathers do. Good, but there's a lot more out there which does the job in a nicer way. The 3 stars I gave it is closer to how I feel about it than the neutral rating, but I can't justify giving it a thumbs up.

Spicey, saddle soap topnotes seated atop a choking cloud of equine musk, that could never pass for a gentleman in polite society.

I tried this and Fumerie Turque at Barneys today. When it first went on, it reminded me of the liquid soap that we used in our grammer school bathroom. After a loooong dry down (over 45 minutes), the soap disappeared leaving me wearing a saddle on my arm. Mixed with the Fumerie Turque, it is incredible.

I never realized Spain was so soapy. This one's understated machismo.I like Jack Twist's " Atticus Finch" reference. It does evoke a man in his 50's who spends time in libraries. As to the lavender, I mean the spice, er . . .I mean the top notes--- well, your guess is as good as mine.No one has posted them anywhere that I can find. Nor, for that matter, any of the other notes" Woods resting on leather"-- that's nice, but.could we be more specific? If any of my fellow BN'ers find what they are, would you be so kind as to post them?.The official description at T&H's site is embarassing: " John Wayne . . but not on a horse . . .in a cherry red Ferrari. "Er . . .I think not.Sillage is not strong, it's not meant to be. I wonder why they didn't make a shaving cream out of this one? Or did they? If so, it's not on the T&H site.Longevity is decent. My favorite of their frags, and I'm not just saying that because I'm mature, bookish, tall, dark, handsome, a pillar of integrity, and (of course) understated.I hope you give this scent a try.

A spicy leather with hints of castile soap. Reminds me of Givenchy Gentleman a little. Has that worn leather feel to it but not as... repugnant. Musk and sandalwood in the drydown. Nice, classy and a little over the top for a refined edge.

Truefitt and Hill's Spanish Leather cologne, created in 1830, was a surprise in two ways. First, it is nothing like Trumper's cologne of the same name which is quite redolent and spicy. Secondly, it resembles a weaker version (after shave) of Prada's new Amber for Men. This is a very warm and comforting scent, the kind that Gregory Peck's Atticus Finch might have worn in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. It is redolent of a man who has reached maturity (fifties) and who spends his life in libraries, both at home and in society. The scent of leather and tobacco is the overall impression for me.Although T&H do not spell out any of the ingredients in their literature, I detect musk, sandalwood and amber with a very subtle mix of oak moss, tobacco and patchouli in the base. It's quite nice without being outstanding.

A sweet, soapy, spicy accord with hints of "dirty" is what all Spanish Leather is about. This is my first experience with Cordovan leather (made from "horse butt" hide) and from what I have heard and read, spanish leather is usually more "festive" spicy and sweet than English or Arabian leather. Despite having a distinct musky tea-like note indicating at a possible "unisex" tag, an underlying layer of light leather steers this ever so slightly towards the "masculine" category. For men, its like wearing pink and getting away with it. There is a certain spicy cool effect in play here (probably clove buds note?). Unlike other "sweet" leathers like Serge Lutens Daim Blond, T&H Spanish leather doesnt overdo the sweet and musky elements of the composition. Spanish Leather dries down to a musky woody base with longevity clocking in at 5 hours. There's not enough latino heat in Spanish Leather to make it a permanent part of my fragrance harem because the scent isn't as "well rounded" and "voluptuous" as I would like it to be. Still, its an easy leather to wear and one of the better fragrances from T&H.
