Bucoliques de Provence by L'Artisan Parfumeur
This presents itself to me as some sort of gray, blue-gray or slate glass. Transparent yet thick-enough glass that looking through are only distorted shapes and impressions of the material meant to be in my view.I read the notes and I agree – yes lavender, yes iris, yes spice – but here it’s all about the impressions they animate. Powdery, herbal, balsamic, sweet and a touch astringent.
Portraits : The Tragedy of Lord George by Penhaligon's
There are times nothing but a good pampering will do the cleanse a stressful week away. On some of these occasions, my destination will be a nice barber’s for a proper wet shave. This is what those days smell of.My guy alternates between Pinaud Clubman and another bottle I haven’t remembered to ask about. There’s a green soapiness as the lather goes on: soft mulching bark against a fleeting white flower, straightened out by some kind of viscous sap.
That’s the shave though. Lord George exists for me in the subsequent space. When that distinctive soapiness lingers and mingles with the tipple then at hand. Brandy perhaps, whisky more likely given the rising whiffs of warm spice. Underlying the booziness and soapiness is a plush biscuity tonka that hints at a dark caramel or treacle.
Unsurprising yes, as the fougere genre is thick with alternatives, but that is a complement for days when luxuriant familiarity is called for.
