Reviews of Ambre Nuit by Christian Dior

Lately I have been on a real amber kick again and this one is stunning. Its blended perfectly, it's so beautiful and wearable. You can smell so many notes and different aspects, but nothing becomes too overpowering. It's not too heavy and in your face, its smoothe.

It turns out that to truly breathe in the magic of Ambre nuit, I had to contrast it with MFK Grand soir on the other wrist. They share a deep core of amber identity, meditative and therapeutic. But where Grand soir slides like clarinet notes into mellifluent vanilla, until it hits an outer rim of camphoric, cristalline bezoin, Ambre nuit is a seamlessly citric amber cloud. Both of them float. Both cast a dark amber spell like a city-lit night sky.

I got a powdered wood chip incense type fragrance, very simple, not a lot of change. It's nice, but it's a lot like many other things I've tried over the years and for this price point, I expected more. Neutral in many ways.

An oriental, sweet to the bone amber fully covered with rose. Actually on my skin it's a rose with an amber background with a pinch of pink pepper and maybe honey as well. The rose is jammy and beautiful. The whole fragrance is definitely leaning towards feminine bu that is okay for me.

Perfect match for those who like oriental rose scents (without oud) with an addition of amber for a change.

The sillage and longevity are impressive so it is easy to overspray that one.

I like Ambre Nuit but it was not at the high level I expected. Mixture of bergamot, rose & amber give this fragrance a nice sophisticated feel. There's a little bit of funk going on in the background. Pleased to own a healthy sized decant but wouldn't pull the trigger on a full bottle. Longevity and projection are below average.

When dreams come true, Ambre Nuit should be worn.

This is a delightful oriental scent.
The amber is dry and crisp, caused by delicious bergamot, grapefruit and a fine rose. The pepper is rather present too.
I could wish for more sillage. On the other hand, I adore the private world this wonderful concoction creates.
Once again I am smitten with a beautiful contradiction: warmth and zest.

In my top ten.

Ambre Nuit is a bit of a meh experience for me. It's a rose and amber combo with a little sharp citrus sitting at the top. Not feminine like I was expecting it to be. The rose doesn't stand out sharply. I also get a bit of plastic or rubberyness that I normally associate with oud, however it's not a listed note here.

It's also super soft. I've heard that many of the maison Dior line have been watered down over the years, and my experience with AN falls in line with that expectation. I'll be sure to give it another few wearings and see if I can get a bit more oomph out of it. But for now, the performance doesn't match the price. I also have Feve Delicieuse, Spice Blend, and Oud Ispahan to try, to see if they've fared a bit better.

The positive side is that it has a dryer take on amber. It would therefore project as masculine. But the negative one is that it lacks the beautiful powdery and what I call fresh mushroom smell of amber. Very nice though. Even for a young woman.

Ive worn it half a dozen times, I was initially loving it, now, eh. It is really "pretty." To me it is a pink hued champagne. It tastes good, sure. It is refined. I'd prefer a beer. I wanted my wife to wear it, she's not a fan, though she gave no reason. So I'll sit on my 10ml, rechecking to see if something changes for me. A bit too feminine for me, a bit too soft. Its not an "amber" fragrance, I'd say the lead here is a kind of salty rose.

Christian Dior Ambre Nuit (2009) is spoken about in superlatives, and deservedly so, as it has survived well beyond its original intended purpose as a late entry into a limited-edition cologne line began in 2004. The creative director at the time (Heidi Slimane) had made all of these colognes unisex in nature, and the ones that survived (including Ambre Nuit) would receive concentration upgrades and be re-launched as part of the Christian Dior Prive line in 2010, alongside newer entries at the time like Leather Oud (2010); all of these have been made by house perfumer François Demachy. Later on in 2018, when the Christian Dior Prive line was revamped and further distanced from the designer-tier perfumes by being renamed Maison Christian Dior, Ambre Nuit survived culling again, and is now pretty much the most popular entry in the prestige house-within-a-house at Dior, alongside newer selections like Fève Délicieuse (2015) and Balade Sauvage (2018). Ambre Nuit is a bit misleading in name, as it does not have amber, but rather contains rose and ambergris as its main focus, two beyond-classic ingredients associated with the 18th and 19th centuries which gave birth to most Western conventions about perfume. Fans of green rose chypres or jammy rose scents might see Ambre Nuit as a bit too "grandma" for their liking, but lovers of orientals will be all over this.

Ambre Nuit is labeled unisex, but I think this leans feminine according to most mainstream tastes due to the soft glow of the rose and ambergris, but for ardent rose fans this does in fact swing unisex. The opening is sweet grapefruit and betrgamot, which lends Ambre Nuit a modern freshness, if only for the first few minutes. Once the dark Turkish rose and round pink pepper notes of the heart kick in, the oriental intent of Ambre Nuit becomes quite clear, and never lets go for the duration of the wear. This sweet rose tandem is made all the sweeter by a smooth cistus labdanum base warmed by the ambergris which gives the scent its name, and hours of indulgent sillage result. Ambre Nuit can be quite suffocating in large doses, and this is in no way a scent for anything other than cold weather if used outside, with a day's worth of projection even in the winter's chill. I'd say Ambre Nuit is best for formal evening events and romantic use, as the smell of rose often implies romance anyway, especially when mulled over as it is here. Demachy delivers a fairly textbook treatment of rose and ambergris with Ambre Nuit, using only a few modern embellishments in a rather spartan, uncomplicated composition. Dior may not strictly be seen as niche even in its prestige lines, but this is niche perfumery by definition regardless. Ambre Nuit doesn't compromise in what it wants to be by adhering to a budget or demographic spread, and doesn't have a ton of blending to hide the seams between ingredients, delivering its message without regard to sales figures or trends, which is far more admirable than many self-proclaimed niche perfumes flooding the luxury segment.

I really like Ambre Nuit, although I admit the staunch traditionalism of a rich rose and ambergris perfume will turn away most modern noses looking for "fresh", or "dynamic" perfumes that speak to their generation with expertly-calculated aromachemicals designed for "performance" and "compliments", but the old heads here that hate anything made in the 21st century might find a bit of redemption in Ambre Nuit, if they can get past the steep prestige price tag. If you're willing to drop double what Dior wants for most of its department store fare, you'll be in for a real treat if rose and convincing ambergris is your fetish (whether it is ambroxide or the real stuff from whales), but for folks not looking to wear an exercise in adapting historical perfume combinations to modern luxury use, the rest of the more-recent Maison Christian Dior releases might be of greater interest. Perfumes in this price range tend to create more deliberation before purchase, and I can't blame anyone saying stuff like this is simply too much, but there is still something to be said about the simple beauty of this scent; it has survived the rebooting of its own line thrice so far, and Ambre Nuit still makes top lists of perfumes for rose lovers. I do find the heavy-handed combination of key ingredients a bit stifling here, but a light application in the right context can solve any problems of being cloying to the wearer. Solid thumbs up, but be sure to sample before diving in, as this is one rose perfume that hits hard and doesn't let go until you scrub it off multiple times.

A regal-feeling fragrance, so full of sophistication and class!

When I try Christian Dior's Ambre Nuit, my day changes as I ponder how such a niche quality scent would fit in my routine that day. I become very self-conscious on whether or not I'm "overdressed" with this magnificent potion, which clearly is a formal scent meant for high-brow occasions.

Ambre Nuit has a clean citrus opening and overall has a boozy, powderish amber-rose-peppery spice finish that is simply fantastic! Unquestionably unisex, and a marvelous creation from Christian Dior!

Sensual and wispy..citrus and rose with a nice twist of ambergris. The rose is of high quality and it sounds silly but it feels like a niche oud creation without the oud. That's my experience with high quality rose, I always seem to be smelling them with oud these days, so it's fantastic to find a fragrance that showcases the high quality rose. Certainly unisex and I'm reminded of fragrances like hamman bouquet and habit rouge, if Demachy had added a drop of vanilla we'd practically have guerlinade in a bottle. Maybe the ultimate suit and tie fragrance, I could imagine this been worn at the Opera or theatre, imagine listening to the flower duet and catching whisps of amber nuit..does life get anymore elegant? Longivity is very good and projection is perfectly fine, the price is completely justified in my opinion.

I don't often wear floral scents, but when I do, I get compliments from women - ultimately, I think that women prefer floral perfumes. This is a very nice rose, with the amber for substance. To me it's a formal scent, sophisticated and refined, but very wearable at the office, particularly if you are gay or French. One of my favorite scents at the moment.

So many notes to like.

Ambre Nuit is a classy-spicy-boozy-amber scent that features rose as the star note. Definitely getting a nice understated rose in the initial sprays but then into the drydown, the rose becomes the headliner while all the other notes play complementary roles.

Sometimes I feel like it's an unmistakably masculine scent, while other times it leans feminine. It's enjoyable throughout, all the way into the sweet-ambery finish that still clings to that rose note.

Not a beast but it does project nicely and has very good longevity on my skin, lasts all day.

The only Rose based frag I like for men. Really nice slightly citrus opening , Rose soon comes in to play along with the Ambergris but it'snot an old woman rose it's quite juicy and tarty.

I just can't understand how someone could finish a bottle of this in their lifetime as it's hard to find occasions for me when it's wearable. It is very noble and could work well for men and women.

It's something I imagine wealthy people wearing

I get good performance and moderate projection with this ( which is appropriate for this frag)

Ambre Nuit is a major disappointment, especially considering the standards of the Dior La Collection Privée.

Its best feature is the lushness of the rose, and how it is elegantly paired with labdanum and woods.

However, it also comes across as timid, insubstantial and indistinctive. Additionally, it is very soft (which is okay, but for this style I would prefer something with more presence), and is surprisingly thin and fleeting beyond the first couple of hours.

A rose of this style is much more well explored in Oud Ispahan and Noir de Noir.

This is an exquisite clean, simple amber. Very linear, projection is only fair, as is Sillage. Longevity is good. It reminds me of a less sharp Bn9 N.Y. Amber. I really like this frag. but my reviews include price worthiness. At $400-$500 I DON'T see it worth that much.
Dropped my review to 3 stars...Longevity is horrible. On par with a Penhaligon's 3hr max. Projection failed after 15 min, was still a skin frag, but after 2 hrs all but gone.

This is gorgeous – beautiful warm amber and a lovely smoky rose dusted with powder. One of my colleagues came in to my office today and wanted to know what that lovely smell was – she thought I was burning some sort of fancy incense. I gave her a sniff of my wrist, then the sample bottle (courtesy of purecaramel) and she said it smells nicer on, which I totally agree with. While it still smells great, there's something slightly cool about it in the bottle, but once it hits your skin and warms up, the amber really hits its stride and billows about you in a beautiful warm cloud. After five hours of wear, it was sitting a little closer to the skin and the amber took on a slight caramel note – yum! There is something that is just so calming and relaxing about this one. I started getting cross about something at work today, then got a nice big waft of this and it was like “aaaaahhhhhhh” and all was good again. Longevity is brilliant – I could still smell this, albeit much fainter, over 14hours later. A definite winner!

A glorious Pink Rose dances with Ambergris. Whispers of the citric. Base of perfectly balanced Cistus.
A hint to soft Amber at end.
Fred Astaire masculinity and a fine example of sublime melody.
My favoured,of the Prive.
A Demachy Masterpiece.

Ambre Nuit might be the best Dior I've tried, a great blend of rose and amber. Pink pepper and guaiac accent the main pairing, but really take a back seat and only slightly shape the overall picture of the fragrance. It's mostly rosy, smoky, and woody, but there's surely a gourmand aspect in the background as well because it is sweet (I'd always guess vanilla in the absence of anything else) but not cloyingly so.

It actually reminds me of Chanel Coromandel in its unisex, semi-cosmetic smell, mixed with powder and smoke. Again, the cosmetics vibe is usually prohibitive for me (as in DHI), but here (as with Coromandel) it is strangely pleasant. I need to do a more thorough comparison but the likeness is definitely there, as I only tried Coromandel three days ago.

Described as a cologne by Dior but regarded by most reviewers as EDP concentration, the projection is pretty strong but not overwhelming, and the longevity is impressive. The value is there, as the smallest bottle at $210 is at least a large bottle at 125ml.

Great scent, and I need to continue to wear it more. Might be bottle-worthy.

It smells familiar, and reminds me of Chanel Coromandel in a way, and of La Nuit de l'Homme in a way.

I really enjoy the opening of Ambre Nuit, but given the two fragrances it reminds me of from my collection, I need to get more from the development to consider adding a bottle to the rotation.

Dusty dry ambergris (lightly powdery in a nice way), with a rose note that is pretty addictive. Could not stop smelling my hand after spraying this one. Well worth the price (Dior boutique purchase). Quality fragrance with average projection and longevity.8.5/10

Speechless...

Ambre Nuit is one of the most luxurious fragrances I have ever smelled! Every time I put this on it just feels sublime!

is essentially a rose and ambergris fragrance, which sounds simple... until you try it! It is so well done and smooth, that even though it is simple, it is one of the best things I have ever come across! Perfection in a bottle!

The Rose is made sparkling and light and held up by the fresh bergamot and grapefruit, whilst the ambergris is surrounded by pink pepper, labdanum and amber... with hints of guaiac wood & patchouli. It's so fresh yet decadent!

I think the idea behind this creation from François Demachy was to evoke the feeling of the grand balls 18th Century... full of elegant and decadent people. The fragrance certainly smells decadent, but it's also quite wearable at the same time.

This is without a doubt one of the best perfumes I have ever encountered... and I would recommend anyone to try it! Just beautiful stuff!
