HOVE – ELAN D’ORANGE

The blossoms, fruit rinds, leaves and twigs of the Bitter Orange Tree have been used in diverse recipes and scents for centuries. A breakdown of these parts and what they are called follows:

Neroli – orange blossom extracted by steam distillation
Orange Blossom – orange blossom/rinds by enfleurage or solvent extraction
Petitgrain – leaves and twigs of orange blossom by steam distillation

Although the famous Eau de Cologne in its various guises has utilized the orange tree throughout history, the most intense creations of almost solo orange have been Floris’ Special No. 127 (1910), created for a Russian Grand Duke before that unpleasantness with the Bolsheviks, and Penhaligon’s Castile (1988). The latter seems to be out of production, but the Floris still continues to this day. Note that both were only available in edt concentrations.

Hove’s Elan d’Orange has been in production for quite a long time. I came across it first in the early 1990s, when I was exploring the house for the first time. However, it may have been in existence since the house was founded in 1931. You can get no response with emails to the Hove home, they just ignore inquiries.

The Elan d’Orange is every bit as fabulous as both the 127 and the Castile. Strong, fabulous and everything orange you could ever want. Plus available in both cologne and perfume strength with prices quite competitive to the 127.

Elan is translated as momentum or impulse. Once hooked on Elan d’Orange, you will be returning again and again to freshen up. An economical and affordable alternative to the Floris and Penhaligon’s creations. A big thumbs up!

I see a lot of people enjoying 4711, but wishing it would last longer. Elan D'Orange would be a pretty good solution. I have been dabbing on small amounts as part of my office rotation and have been getting close to all day longevity, albeit most of that time emitting minimal projection. That isn't bad for a neroli-centric eau de cologne.

Deep and strong orange notes bring this fragrance to life. Another scent that is rare and not well known from this store in New Orleans.
