Latest Reviews of Tuvache Gardenia
I snagged a vial of vintage perfume on Ebay, and...Wow! My guess, based on the design of the vial and label ('Tuvache, NY' not 'Coty' or 'Yardley'), is my juice is from the late 1950's or 1960's, in a metal and glass - maybe a purse flacon, so fairly well-preserved, but probably has some changes in scent due to time. It does smell like real gardenia, plus a sweet bubble-gum or cotton candy scent. That sounds dreadful, but it works, somehow, perhaps because real gardenias have that sweet, slightly decayed scent. It does not smell like anything else, nor does it smell dated, imo, like a lot of vintage scents. It is sweet, but not cloying, not fruity or gourmand. Jungle Gardenia is unique. I have not smelled the later versions, so cannot comment on those.
Mme Tuvache was apparently an American who felt that she needed a 'French' name in order to be taken seriously as a perfumer, and came up with Tuvache. "Tu vache" means 'you cow' in French. Gotta love her!
